Oppo Realme 1 review: a good and affordable phone

You can buy OPPO Realme 1 here

According to Oppo, a well-known electronics manufacturer, the new Oppo Realme 1 was released to meet the needs of young people. The novelty will be sold exclusively online and only through Amazon.

Realme 1 has a 18: 9 display, up to 6 GB of RAM (depending on version), a fiberglass case with a unique design, and Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. It looks like the phone was designed as a rival for Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Oppo marketers don’t hide it.

Let’s find out if this gadget has everything you need to stand out in the market of budget smartphones?

Oppo Realme 1 Design

The case of Oppo Realme 1 is made of fiberglass with the effect of gem faces. Fifteen tangential planes of the back panel, very unusually reflect light, it makes the smartphone look like a diamond.

Although this design is definitely unique and luxurious in its own way, for some it may seem tasteless. One of the problems with using fiberglass is that it easily collects fingerprints.

Due to the impressive screen / case ratio of 84.75%, Realme 1 is very compact. And although the screen is not entirely frameless, the front of the phone looks sleek and modern. Despite the fact that the frame is made of plastic, the build quality here is first class. For all the time of the review, the phone I accidentally fell several times, without receiving any significant damage.

The Oppo Realme 1 rear camera module protrudes slightly from the case. On the left side of the smartphone is a volume rocker, on the right is a power button and a tray for SIM cards. Although many models in this price range have hybrid trays, Realme 1 is equipped with a separate one for two Nano-SIM cards and one microSD card.

The fingerprint scanner is missing here. Instead, the gadget offers face recognition, for security, plus standard login options with a password. The face recognition function works quite well, but in direct sunlight or in low light, it does not work correctly.

Smartphone features

The Oppo Realme 1 has impressive specifications for its price. It is equipped with an 8-core MediaTek Helio P60 processor operating at 2.0 GHz. This makes it a competitor not only for Redmi 5, but also for the much more expensive Redmi Note 5 Pro.

The flagship MediaTek Helio P60 processor is manufactured using the 12-nm process technology and is equipped with NeuroPilot AI technology, which contributes to the better face recognition function, as well as improves photos and videos.

Realme 1 is on sale in three versions: 3 GB / 32 GB for the price of $ 130 (Rs 8,300); 4 GB / 64 GB for the price of $ 160 (Rs 10 200); and the model I am reviewing is 6 GB / 128 GB for the price of $ 205 (Rs 13,000). Internal memory can be expanded with a microSD card up to 256 GB.

Screen and brightness

Oppo Realme 1 is also equipped with a 6-inch Full-HD + display (1080 × 2160 pixels) with an aspect ratio of 18: 9. The screen is very shiny in the sun, and the viewing angles are disappointing, alas. Nevertheless, the colors are saturated, and the panel itself is bright and suitable for comfortable outdoor use. I am glad that Oppo Realme does not have an eyebrow, which has recently become a popular trend among smartphones.

Add-ons and communication

Smartphone Oppo Realme 1 has a non-removable 3410 mAh battery and works on Color OS 5.0 installed on top of Android 8.1 Oreo.
As for wireless connections, the phone uses 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2. GPS / A-GPS is responsible for navigation.
Instead of a faster USB Type-C, Realme 1 is equipped with a Micro-USB port for charging and data transfer. Of the two installed SIM-cards, only one can work in the 4G range, while the other is only in 3G. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack and an FM radio.

Performance and Tests

Inexpensive Oppo Realme 1, easily copes with basic daily tasks, like creating photos, surfing the Internet, using social networking applications, watching videos and recording videos in Full HD.

Casual games like Subway Surfers, and heavier ones like Asphalt 8 are played here without loss of frames or stutters. During heavy loads, the smartphone does not even heat up.
In the AnTuTu test, Realme 1 achieved an impressive 138,326 points, while the more expensive Redmi Note 5 Pro, running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, reached only 105,369 points.

Other test results are also impressive. This Oppo smartphone showed 38 fps in GFXbench T-Rex and 12 fps in the more demanding GFX Bench Manhattan 3.1 test, as well as 8,009 points in the PC Mark Work 2.0 and 1513/5795 in the same and multicore Geekbench tests, respectively.

System and software

Oppo Realme 1 works under the control of Color OS 5.0 branded shell based on Android 8.1 OS Oreo. The animation at the interface is instant and smooth, but the system as a whole is very cluttered up. In the settings menu and in the quick launch panel, it is quite difficult to navigate.

In Color OS 5.0, there is no application menu, and the Google Now panel is replaced with a special screen that displays the weather, steps taken, favorite contacts and recent events.

However, there are a lot of great features like dual apps, a shortcut for three-screenshots, a theme app and support for gestures on the lock screen. Information about plans to upgrade to the version of Android P is not available yet.

Battery autonomy

The battery life of the Oppo Realme 1 impressed me. In the HD Video loop test, the battery lasted an impressive 11 hours and 30 minutes. As for the real performance, I have never been able to completely discharge the battery even with heavy use of the phone during the day.

Oppo Realme 1 does not support fast charging, but fully charges from 0 to 100% from 2.5 to 3 hours.

Camera Oppo Realme 1

The budget Oppo Realme 1 has a 13-megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and an 8-megapixel front camera that can recognize 296 face points with AI (AI – artificial intelligence).

The camera application is easy to use and offers a wide range of modes like Panorama, Time Lapse, Virtual Objects, and also the fully functional Pro mode, which allows you to change the shutter speed, ISO, exposure, aperture and white balance.

Selfie camera using AI automatically determines the tone and skin type, age, gender and based on this data optimizes image settings. The facial features become softer, but an unpleasant watercolor effect is also added. AI has 8 million beauty points in its database.

The front camera of Realme 1 creates decent self-shots in good light, with poor – the quality gets worse.

Both the rear and the front camera use software algorithms that are capable of creating images with a blurring background effect. However, images are obtained with poor quality edge detection and lose some detail.

The 13-megapixel rear camera of Realme 1 is also equipped with an AI-based scene recognition function, which allows you to optimize settings for different scenes and objects in real time. Images are obtained with a decent amount of detail, although they look a bit dull. But, the sensor has a bad dynamic range and is constantly focused in low light.

The maximum video resolution for recording for both cameras is 1080p. The video is obtained with poor detail and not stabilized.

There is also a “virtual objects” mode, which is well implemented. Another fun way to impress friends. It can be used both front and rear camera.

The new Oppo Realme 1 has a unique design (not everyone will appreciate it), excellent performance, good battery life, a separate microSD card slot, a decent screen and an amazing price-performance ratio.

But the lack of a fingerprint scanner, cluttered software and the mediocre quality of cameras make Realme 1 not the best smartphone in this market segment.

Benefits of Oppo Realme 1

  • Unique design.
  • Excellent performance.
  • Not expensive.
  • Good battery life.

Disadvantages of Realme 1

  • Average quality cameras.
  • There is no fingerprint scanner.
  • Cluttered OS.

Oneplus 6 review – all you need for the best price

You can buy OnePlus 6 here

Four years after the release of OnePlus One, the company introduced a new product – OnePlus 6. This is the most beautiful and sophisticated model of the company, with excellent performance and cost, which is significantly less than the flagship Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy.

Design OnePlus 6

Smartphone OnePlus 6 is unlike its predecessors. Its body is made of glass, and the back is slightly curved. The novelty is available in three colors: glossy – black (Mirror Black), matte black (Midnight Black) and silk-white (Silk White).

To increase the strength of the phone, a protective glass of Gorilla Glass 5 is installed on the front and back panels.

On the right side of the new OnePlus is the Alert Slider button, with which you can quickly switch between loud ringer, vibration, silent modes, and a pop-up window will inform you of what mode the gadget is in.

At the bottom of the phone there is a USB Type-C port, a speaker and a headphone jack. On the rear panel there is a module with two cameras, under which the fingerprint scanner is located. The scanner works quickly and unlocks the device in 0.2 seconds. There is also a face recognition function that unlocks the device in 0.4 seconds.

OnePlus 6 is not waterproof, but it is protected from moisture in the most vulnerable areas. The headphone jack, fingerprint scanner and control buttons are carefully insulated and protected from water, so the smartphone will easily survive a little rain or a drop from the sink.

Together with the new OnePlus, the company introduced its first bluetooth headphones OnePlus Bullets Wireless, which are sold separately for $ 70 (Rs 4,500). OnePlus Bullets Wireless are not fully wireless since there is a wire between two headphones, but this design allows them to be used for up to 8 hours without recharging. When removed from the ear, the headset will automatically turn off, which increases battery life. Headphones also support fast charging with a USB Type-C cable.

What is in the box

  • Smartphone itself.
  • Silicone Case.
  • Dash Charge Charger.
  • USB Type-C cable.
  • User’s manual.
  • SIM card extraction tool (clip).

Screen and its quality

The OnePlus 6 comes with a 6.3-inch AMOLED Full HD + panel with a resolution of 2280 × 1080 (402 ppi) in 19: 9 format. This is the largest display the company has installed in its gadgets. The colors on the screen are saturated and shrill here, and in the settings you can select various profiles, including the sRGB and DCI-P3 modes.

Not without a “eyebrow”, which is smaller than the iPhone X, but more than the Essential Phone and comparable to the Huawei P20. With the help of the application, the “eyebrow” can be removed and installed the usual notification panel.

Interface and functionality

The OnePlus 6 phone runs on Android 8.1 with an OxygenOS interface, which has over 200 performance improvements. In addition to the quick work of the interface, there are many new gestures.

One of the useful OxygenOS options is an improved game mode that prevents applications from collapsing when notifications pop-up , and also disables background processes to ensure maximum fps speed in games.

OxygenOS’s other familiar features are “night mode”, which filters out blue light, “reading mode”, in which the screen turns black and white, making it more pleasing to the eye and “dark mode” for night owls with battery saving.

Performance and iron

OnePlus 6 is equipped with an 8-core Snapdragon 845 processor (4 Kryo 385 GOLD cores with a frequency of 2.8 GHz and 4 Kryo 385 SILVER cores with a frequency of 1.8 GHz, however, the device comes with a different amount of RAM and internal memory:

  • 6 GB of RAM / 64 GB of ROM – $ 530 (Rs 32 500 ).
  • 8 GB of RAM / 128 GB of ROM – $ 580 (Rs 35,500).
  • 8 GB RAM / 256 GB ROM – $ 630 (Rs 39,000).

Unfortunately, all OnePlus smartphones do not support microSD memory cards and the new model is no exception.

Connectivity and connectivity

OnePlus 6 supports networking in:

  • 2G: GSM / GPRS / EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz).
  • 3G: WCDMA (850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz), TD-SCDMA (B34 / B39), CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.
  • 4G: FDD-LTE (1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/18/19/20/25/26/28/29/30/66), TDD-LTE (38/39 / 40/41).

It also has support for Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, Bluetooth 5.0 (ptX and aptX HD) and NFC for mobile payments.

Oneplus 6 cameras

On the back of the OnePlus 6 is a dual camera – a 16-megapixel main sensor with an f / 1.7 lens and an additional 20-megapixel, which has the same focal length as the main camera. The front panel is equipped with a 20 MP camera f / 1.7 for selfies

The camera application can be opened by double-clicking on the power button. There are three main shooting modes: photo, video and portrait, and swipe up – on the bottom of the screen opens four more modes, including slow motion, professional mode, time marking and panorama.

In Pro mode, histogram setting, ISO, white balance, shutter speed, focus and exposure control are available, RAW files can also be created.

Image quality

The OnePlus 6 smartphone has the best camera that has ever been on OnePlus devices. The pictures are detailed, with well-balanced colors, and the dynamic range does not have burnt highlights.

At night, the OnePlus gadget also creates beautiful, sharp photos that are comparable in quality to Pixel 2 XL.

Video quality

The new OnePlus allows you to shoot slow motion 4K × 60 fps. The function works very smoothly and it is worth considering when shooting fast scenes. However, good lighting is required for proper operation. At night, or in low light conditions, you can switch to 4K × 30 fps mode.

Sound quality

The only speaker of OnePlus 6 is quite loud and with good sound, but if you compare it with the system of two speakers on iPhone 8 / X or Samsung Galaxy, it becomes obvious that the sound quality here is on different levels.

Call quality

During calls, problems with OnePlus 6 did not arise. Dynamic voices are loud, clear and easily recognizable with their natural tonality. The microphone is also clear and understandable.

Battery life

OnePlus 6 is equipped with a 3300 mAh battery, which ensures the work of the phone during the day with intensive use, while with moderate use you can achieve 2 days of battery life.

Fast Charging Dash Charge allows you to fully charge the gadget from zero to 100% in 1 hour and 40 minutes. Especially surprised that the speed of fast charging is not reduced even when using the phone. However, it is worth remembering that Dash Charge is a proprietary technology that does not work with third-party chargers and cables. The smartphone does not support wireless charging.

OnePlus 6 Price

The sixth OnePlus is almost twice as expensive as the first OnePlus One. Let’s compare the price of the novelty at $ 630 (Rs 39,000) with some of the 2018 flagships.

  • Apple iPhone X: from $ 1000 (Rs 61 500 ).
  • Apple iPhone 8 Plus: from $ 800 (Rs 49,500).
  • Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus: from $ 840 (Rs 51,500).
  • Google Pixel 2 XL: from $ 850 (Rs 52,500).
  • Huawei P20 Pro: starting at 900 € (Rs 68,000).

OnePlus 6 is the company’s best product, with a clean interface, high performance, advanced cameras and familiar features. However, this is not quite the perfect smartphone because of the awkward implementation of the new gesture control system. I sincerely hope that OnePlus will improve it with a future software update.

I was also disappointed by the lack of wireless charging. But despite all the shortcomings, the sixth OnePlus is a beautiful flagship phone for reasonable money.

Advantages of OnePlus 6

  • Excellent performance.
  • Stylish premium design.
  • Fast fingerprint scanner.
  • Large amount of internal memory.
  • Sound mode switch Alert Slider.
  • Improved cameras. Quick charge.

Disadvantages of OnePlus 6

  • The gesture control system is not complete.
  • No wireless charging.
  • Partial protection against moisture.
  • Deficiencies in security features.

Honor View 10 review – reliable smartphone with good functionality

You can buy Honor View 10 here

Last year, Honor 8 Pro was released – one of the best smartphones in the middle price segment. Hoping to repeat its success, Huawei presented its updated and improved version – Honor View 10.

What has changed in the design of Honor View 10?

Honor View 10 with a fully metal body fits comfortably in your hand and does not seem like a cheap smartphone. However, it also does not cause admiration.

The screen is made in Full View format with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 and surrounded by minimized frames. It upsets that the double camera on the back panel became convex – an important advantage of the Honor 8 Pro was a flat camera. But now the antenna lines merge with the rest of the body.

On the front panel is a proximity sensor, speaker grille and 13-megapixel selfie camera. Physical Home button is not here, in its place – a fingerprint scanner is provided.

At the bottom of the smartphone Honor View 10 there is a universal USB Type-C port. To the left of it you will find a 3.5-mm headphone jack, on the right – one speaker. On the left side there is a hybrid slot for nano-SIM and MicroSD cards, on the right there is a power button and volume control. In addition to the microphone, there is an infrared sensor on top. To the right of the module with two cameras on the back there is an LED flash. In the middle is the Honor logo.

Smartphone features

The first thing that catches your eye is the 5.9-inch FHD + LTPS IPS Honor View 10 LCD display with a curved 2.5-inch aluminosilicate glass.

The Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor boasts 4 Cortex A73 cores with a clock frequency of 2.36 GHz and 4 Cortex A53 cores with a frequency of 1.8 GHz, and the Mali G72 MP12 chip is used to solve the graphics problems of the Honor V10.

The Kirin 970’s built-in neural processor (NPU) will “explore” user habits and their favorite applications to increase performance. View 10 has 6 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of internal memory for storing files. If this is not enough, use the microSD card slot and increase the memory to 256 GB.

Lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 3750 mAh supports SuperCharge mode. On top of the Android 8.0 Oreo operating system, there is an EMUI 8.0 user interface with many proprietary Honor applications.

Supported Networks and Connections

The Honor V10 supports the following connectivity options: GPS, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, Infrared, Bluetooth v4.2 with A2DP, LE, aptX HD. There is a USB-C port, two slots for nano-SIM-cards and a 3.5-mm analog connector.

In Honor View 10 following color schemes are available – Midnight Black and Navy Blue.

Honor View 10 Screen

The 5.9-inch screen of Honor View 10 with a pixel density of 403 PPI occupies 78.6% of the front panel. Excellent color rendition and wide viewing angles are impressive. The image remains readable even in bright light, however, glass may reflect the sun’s rays directly into the eyes.

If you want to change the color temperature, brightness, font size or design of the Honor V10 home screen – select the Display section in the settings. EMUI allows you to adjust the resolution, the higher it is, the faster the battery is discharged.

For better performance of the View 10 display, there is a Normal mode and a Vivid mode – in the latter, the color saturation will be significantly increased. Turn on the Eye comfort option to reduce eye strain at night or in reading mode.

EMUI 8.0 works much better than previous versions of the interface from Huawei. Applications do not crash, no glitches. Pleases the presence of Android OS 8.0 Oreo and a relatively recent security update.
The Honor View 10 phone has several additional features that are not available on the basic Android — adding images to the big screen, opening two versions of the same application, maximum charge saving mode, clearing the memory, etc.

Many applications are pre-installed, including: Microsoft Translator, Phone Manager, Themes, Health, Honor, Hi Honor, Honor Community, Game Suite, Tips, Torch, Hi Care, Compass, Backup, Phone Clone and SOS Emergency.

Despite the distribution by folder, not all applications can fit on the screen. First of all, after purchasing the View 10 phone, you will have to spend time cleaning the system. Most applications are not optimized and do not support enhanced Android Oreo shortcuts. Some do not open in 18: 9 format.

The Honor V10 also comes with Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, UC News, Asphalt Nitro, Bubble Bash 3, Danger Dash, Modern Combat 4 Zero Hour and Spider-Man: Ultimate Power. In the Top Apps and Games folders you will find a button called More – when clicked, a list of recommended games and applications will open.

The Kirin 970 processor promises to support artificial intelligence (AI) with machine learning, but this is a commercial move rather than a truly unique feature. The only application that really uses AI is Microsoft Translate.

The program can recognize and automatically translate speech, as well as handwritten or printed texts. However, these features are already available in Google Translate and other basic Android applications. Unlike competitors, Kirin 970 does not provide the ability to create your own applications with support for AI.

Face Unlock on Honor View 10 is less secure than Apple’s FaceID gadgets — so Huawei recommends using it not to unlock a smartphone, but only to read notifications.

The Face Unlock feature does not always recognize the face of the wearer the first time, and in low light conditions it does not work at all. You can disable the on-screen keys and navigate using the fingerprint scanner.

View 10 has a special mode for working in gloves. If the screen is too often triggered by accidental pressing in your pocket, then select the Touch-disable Mode in the settings. Motion Control and Voice Control are also available here.

V10 performance

Smartphone Honor View 10 copes with everyday tasks without any problems. While navigating the interface, performance remains consistently high.

In games, View 10 is inferior to competitors with the Snapdragon 835 chipset – including the OnePlus 5T. When an action scene takes place in Breakneck, Modern Combat 5 or Dead Trigger 2, Honor starts to lag.

During a heavy load, the tested smartphone heated up, but not in one place, but evenly throughout the entire body. The temperature on the back of the phone can rise to 39 degrees, on the front – up to 41. Thanks to the metal construction, it cools down quickly.

When you try to run a graphical test GFXBench GL on View 10, a blue screen and a warning about overheating appear.

Battery and autonomy

If you devote an hour to games, send emails, chat in WhatsApp, take 10-20 photos and listen to music for 30-45 minutes – the Honor View 10 battery with a capacity of 3750 mAh is enough for the whole day.

In the PCMark Work 2.0 test with a constantly on screen, View 10 lasted 5 hours and 45 minutes. Some of the competitors in the same test were discharged only after 10 hours.

On average, charging Honor smartphone lasts about three hours through the charging adapter 2A from the kit. To speed up battery recovery, you should turn off the device – in this case it will charge from 50 to 90 percent in about 40 minutes.

Honor View 10 Camera

The rear dual camera of Honor View 10 consists of 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel lenses – both with f / 1.8 aperture. The quality of the pictures is lower than that of the best cameras of Huawei smartphones.

Honor V10 software: Photo, Pro Photo, Video, Pro Video, Monochrome, HDR, Night Shot, Panorama, Light Painting, Time-lapse and Slow-motion.

In Pro Photo, you can change shutter speed, exposure compensation, white balance, focus and ISO. In Pro Video – only exposure, focus and white balance. If you need filters like Snapchat, use AR lens. There are also 3D Panorama, Artist Mode, Filter, Watermark and Document Scan.

Even with enough light in the pictures, the main V10 camera doesn’t see the details, it lacks sharpness and textures. On the front camera, the Beauty Mode option is on, and the Beauty Level parameter is set to “5” – because of this, the skin looks unnaturally smooth and pale. Even if you lower the Beauty Level to 0, the picture will not get better.

When shooting at night, the quality falls even lower, and there is no focus. Perhaps the manufacturer will correct these and other shortcomings in the upcoming updates.

Honor View 10 is already available for Rs 29,999. – Honor 8 Pro cost the same last year. Huawei tried to offer something new, but the presence of a single application with artificial intelligence can not compensate for the poor quality of the shooting, mediocre battery, overheating body and other shortcomings.

The design of the Honor V10 is also not impressive – the Honor 7X is twice cheaper and looks almost the same.

Possible alternative

Alternatively, you can pay attention to Moto X4, which has a more affordable price and stylish appearance. On the Vivo V5 Plus or Oppo F3 Plus, the cameras are noticeably better, but if you are willing to spend a little more and get an excellent smartphone in all respects, the OnePlus 5T with 64 GB.

Vivo V9 Review, Providing Awesome Camera Experience

You can buy Vivo V9 here

According to the specifications, the recently released Vivo V9 is a mid-range smartphone. Thanks to good performance, it can easily become a high-end device for most consumers.

The price of the V9 is quite high – $ 380 (Rs 18500). Let’s find out if this device is really a top phone?

Vivo V9 features

Vivo V9 is equipped with a LCD-display with a resolution of 2280 × 1080 (19: 9), and the ratio of the screen to the body is 85.2%. The phone runs on an 8-core Snapdragon 626 processor with a frequency of 2.2 GHz (8 Cortex-A53 cores), in conjunction with an Adreno 506 graphics processor, as well as 4 GB of operational and 64 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded using a separate micro SD cards up to 400 GB.

The new V9 is equipped with a dual rear camera (16-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 aperture) with autofocus and dual LED flash. The front panel has a front-facing 24-megapixel camera with f / 2.0 aperture that can record 1080p video at 30 fps.

The smartphone is powered by a 3260 mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging. In addition, there is WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, Bluetooth 4.2 and USB charging port with USB OTG support. Vivo works on Android OS 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

Box contents

  • Smartphone itself
  • Transparent silicone case.
  • Micro usb cable
  • Power Adapter (5V, 2A).
  • Clip for the extraction of SIM-cards.
  • Documentation.

In a non-metallic body, the Vivo V9 looks beautiful. The smartphone is equipped with a 6.3-inch display with a “eyebrow”, like the iPhone X and is available in two colors – black and gold.

The volume and power buttons on the right side do not feel soft, like on other Chinese smartphones. On the back is a fingerprint scanner, and unlike Apple, Vivo decided not to get rid of it after the introduction of the face recognition function. Thus, we have several ways to unlock the phone.

From the hardware point of view, the V9 from Vivo is a great device. Of course, it will not win design awards for its appearance, but it copes with the tasks set without problems.

Phone screen

In Vivo, they managed to install a 6.3-inch display in a 5.5-inch case, and this is due to the 19: 9 aspect ratio. The Vivo V9 screen does not have a super high resolution, but it is enough for everyday work.

The colors are saturated, and the brightness is enough to view the contents in bright sunlight. But, there is one drawback, the V9 screen easily collects fingerprints.

Performance and Tests

The Snapdragon 626 processor installed on the Vivo V9 is an energy efficient and fairly powerful chipset. It easily handles daily tasks like emails, Twitter, Instagram and even some games.

Snapdragon 626 works in conjunction with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, which makes the phone good in terms of performance. 4 GB of RAM allows you to install a large number of applications, while 64 GB of internal memory gives you more options for using the camera as well as storing music.

Test results

  • Sling Shot Extreme OpenGL ES 3.1 – 474.
  • Sling Shot Extreme Vulkan – 420.
  • AnTuTu – 89 491.
  • GeekBench: 4 944 and 4636 – single core and multi core mode.

Scanners and sensors

The Vivo V9 can be unlocked using a fingerprint scanner or with the face unlock feature. Both options work very fast. These features allow you to conveniently block and unblock access to applications and personal information on your phone.

Sound quality and supported networks

The only speaker Vivo V9, is located at the bottom of the phone. It is not bad, but it is easily closed by hand in landscape mode or during games.

The V9 is a midrange device, so you shouldn’t expect incredible sound quality. Medium and high frequencies are not very clear, and the bass is barely present.

There were no problems with incoming and outgoing calls, the interlocutor is heard perfectly.

Vivo V9 supports the following networks:

  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.
  • UMTS 850/900/1900/2100 MHz.
  • LTE: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28.

Battery life

The Snapdragon 600 processor series is well known for its energy efficiency, which significantly extends the battery life of the phone. A 3260 mAh Vivo V9 battery supports gadget operation for a whole day, and the Quick Charge 3.0 quick charge function allows you to charge it up to 100% in 1 hour.

Of course, using the micro USB port instead of USB-C is a bit distressing, but this will allow you to connect a lot of cables that are in your home. In general, battery life is one of the strengths of the V9.

The Vivo V9 smartphone runs on the Android 8.1 Oreo OS, with the Funtouch OS v4.0 proprietary shell and the installed security patch of February 1, 2018. Vivo is constantly updating its devices, which is good, as most Chinese smartphones do not receive updates at all.

Funtouch OS is very similar to the shell that OPPO uses, which is not surprising, since Vivo and OPPO are subsidiaries. Funtouch OS is a bit like iOS, including the missing application menu and quick brightness adjustment by moving the screen from bottom to top.

V9 has no settings that allow you to remove the “eyebrow” and set the standard notification panel, like on the Huawei P20. But it does not interfere here. Time and status icons are displayed on the right side of the protrusion, while notifications appear on the left side.

This Vivo phone also has a number of other features that make it enjoyable and convenient to use. For example, Smart Motion allows you to take a snapshot down on the screen by drawing the letter “C” – dialing and much more will start. Of course, these are not entirely new features, but it’s nice that they are here.

There is another useful feature – App Clone. It allows you to clone applications, such as WeChat, and run two instances at the same time. This will be useful to those who have multiple accounts, because most applications like Snapchat, Facebook and WeChat, do not allow to log in to more than one account at the same time.

And this is only a small part of the functions that are available on the Vivo V9. Some of them will be useful, and some will be unnecessary. Nevertheless, Vivo did a good job of adding a lot of functions for each, without taking up much space.

Vivo V9 cameras

I was pleasantly surprised at how good the Vivo V9 dual camera is, which consists of a 16-megapixel f / 2.0 aperture and a 5-megapixel sensor, since most cameras on smartphones in this price range are mediocre at best.

There is a portrait mode on both the front and rear cameras. It works in both cases very well. Of course, not as good as on Pixel 2 XL, but better than some competitors that cost almost $ 700 (Rs 49,000). And it is impressive.

The frontal 24-megapixel V9 camera produces good and clear images. This Vivo device also allows you to change the lighting after the picture was taken, switching between natural light, studio, stereo and monochrome. Blur here can also be adjusted after shooting, but it does not work very well. Blurs not only the background, but also the foreground.

The user interface of the Vivo V9 camera is very similar to the iPhone. It has many modes, including Pro, panorama, face decoration, photo, video and visual objects of AR Stickers. It’s nice to see professional and manual modes that allow you to adjust the shutter or ISO to get the perfect shot.

Nowadays, phone camera performance is a very important part. Moreover, many people prefer to leave the camera at home, and prefer the phone for shooting. Vivo from Vivo is a smartphone that in many cases can replace your DSLR.

The cost of Vivo V9 is $ 380 (Rs 18500). With such a price, it competes with the Moto G5s Plus, and if I had a choice between G5s Plus and V9, I would have chosen the latter without hesitation. Nice to see a large 6.3-inch display in a 5.5-inch package.

The only real flaw is the outdated micro USB port. It is time to vivo already fully switch to USB Type-C.

Advantages of Vivo V9

  • Good cameras.
  • Headphone jack.
  • Large display in a small package.

V9 Disadvantages

  • Micro USB connector instead of Type-C.
  • One speaker.
  • System applications (Gmail) do not disable.

Honor 8X review: a capable and seductive phone

You can buy Honor 8X here

The company Honor this year has released a lot of smartphones that offer excellent value for money. One of these is the new Honor 8X. The novelty has little in common with Honor 8 2016. The difference between them is significant, since during this time many changes have occurred in the smartphone market.

Modern smartphones are equipped with a frameless screen and a powerful set of internal components. I found out that in the end Honor had a smartphone, and what interesting things besides a large screen it can offer.

Design and construction

Honor 8X is a lightweight, beautiful and very capable phone with a large 6.5-inch screen with a resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels, an 8-core processor, two main cameras with AI (artificial intelligence) and a low price.

In appearance, the 8X is an obvious update to the Honor 7X. The back panel is glass and is visually divided into two vertical parts, which makes the gadget unusual and distinctive against the background of devices with the same design. Honor calls this solution a “parallel gradient.” The smartphone comes in red and blue housing colors.

Smartphone screen

The aspect ratio of the display here is 19.5: 9. The long case is underlined by a reduced 4.25 mm wide bottom frame, thanks to which the smartphone has an impressive 91% screen to body ratio. The maximum brightness of the panel is 470 nits, which is an average figure for low-cost smartphones.

The Honor 8X screen is well read in the open air, however, the bright sun and glare greatly impair visibility. The edges of the case are rounded, and its thickness is 7.8 mm. Curved glass surface is perfectly combined with a metal frame. In hand, the smartphone feels like a solid and reliable device, without any complaints about the build quality.

Inexpensive Honor 8X is the first smartphone of the company, which is equipped with TÜV Rheinland mode – designed to reduce the blue tint. I found that the bright mode is turned on by default here, as a result of which the colors on the 8X screen look cooler. You can change the settings at your own discretion in the “Screen” section.

Components and functions

On the back there is a fingerprint scanner, which is set high enough, so you have to drag your finger to it. The battery in 8X at 3750 mAh, is available in the phone and a slot for MicroSD / SIM cards.

There is a processor Kirin 710 and 4 GB of RAM. The graphics chip is the weak side of the Honor 8X, so the developers tried to solve this problem by adding GPU Turbo technology. However, it is difficult to say how much it helps.

8X runs on Android 8.1 operating system with EMUI 8.2 user interface. In addition to some camera flaws, this smartphone disappoints me with the installed and outdated Micro USB port, instead of the faster USB Type-C.

Honor 8X cameras

On the back of the Honor 8X is a 20-megapixel lens paired with a 2-megapixel sensor for determining the depth and support for AI (artificial intelligence), which is activated by a special button. With good lighting, the camera provides high detail images. However, post-processing sometimes leads to oversaturated colors. In low light, photographs are much worse. Even with good exposure, digital noise appears, resulting in dark areas becoming blurry. The “bokeh” mode works fine here, it accurately determines the edges of the object and blurs the background.

In Honor, there are many other camera functions that can be played from portrait 3D mode to night mode with image stabilization supported by AI. In real tests, the results do not look as attractive as those of the Huawei P20 Pro, where I first tested this feature.

The front camera on a 16-megapixel f / 2.0 aperture is great for selfies. Image detail in good light is high. In low light noise and blur.

Honor 8X is a powerful middle class phone, the cost of which varies between € 250 and € 300. This is a balanced device with a large screen, sufficient performance, a good camera for its level and good battery life. Yes, outdated hardware components, like micro USB port and one speaker below, spoil the overall impression a bit, but in this price category it is impossible to get everything at once.

Overall, Honor’s 8X turned out to be a great smartphone for your money. However, whether it will be able to win a piece of cake from Xiaomi is not yet known.

  • Big screen.
  • Competitive price.
  • High performance.
  • High-quality glass design.
  • A camera with lots of smart features.

  • Not distinguished among others in the lineup.
  • Outdated Micro USB port.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro review: another good and inexpensive phone

You can buy Redmi 6 Pro here

Monobrow does not leave the minds of Chinese manufacturers of smartphones, if initially the imitation of Apple was the prerogative of small companies, then over time, almost everyone presented their own variation of a smartphone with a bang. Xiaomi stayed until the last and after the flagship Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE presented a budget Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro.

Based on the combination of facts and prices, the phone can become one of the most successfully sold. So, meet the new Redmi 6 Pro.

Smartphone design

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro looks like most others from the Redmi line. Honestly, I am not in favor of such a decision. Nevertheless, the compact metal case with rounded edges, small frames around the display, with a reasonable height and thickness – all this gives the smartphone an excellent appearance. The device feels durable and conveniently located in the hand.

In general, Redmi 6 Pro is a great phone with comfortable ergonomics and functional design – even if there is nothing new in it.

Good bang display

The new Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is not the first Xiaomi smartphone with a “eyebrow” that can be hidden if necessary. It has a 5.84-inch full HD + display with a resolution of 2280 × 1080, an aspect ratio of 19: 9 and a pixel density of 432 PPI. The screen can hardly be called frameless, since the side and bottom frames are significant here, but for a smartphone at this price this is true, given that the ergonomics here are just perfect.

Nevertheless, the colors of the Redmi 6 Pro display are rich, the text and images look crisp. Viewing angles are also good here, maximum brightness is enough to comfortably read the contents even in bright sunlight. You can adjust the saturation and color level to suit your preferences.

Smartphone performance

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is equipped with an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, which provides a good balance of power and efficiency. The phone comes in two memory options: 3/32 GB and 4/64 GB. Internal memory can be increased up to 128 GB using microSD cards.

In everyday use, I did not notice lags or delays. However, to run heavy applications you have to wait a few seconds, especially if they run too much in the background.

It is obvious that Redmi 6 Pro is not a gaming phone. At the minimum settings, some games are played normally, and some with a delay. PUBG Mobile even at the lowest settings has a noticeable loss of frames. However, with the largest loads, the gadget does not get hot.

In general, the internal components here offer excellent performance, which will be enough for most users.

Cameras in Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro

On the back of the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is a module with a main 12-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f / 1.9 and an additional 5-megapixel also with an aperture of f / 2.0 for depth effects. There are LED flash, PDAF and electronic image stabilizator (EIS).

Photographs taken during the daytime are good, with lots of detail and excellent sharpness. However, the dynamic range might be slightly better. The quality of the pictures in low light is the Achilles heel of most budget smartphones, and the Redmi 6 Pro is no different in this part. Considerable shutter lag and the lack of optical image stabilization mean that you need to keep the phone stationary in order to achieve stable photos. The photos taken indoors and in low light conditions, there is considerable noise.

Portrait mode on the Redmi 6 Pro works well. It does an excellent job with detecting the edges of an object. The front 5-megapixel camera with f / 2.0 aperture in good light creates a fairly rich and vivid self. There is support for artificial intelligence (AI) and beauty mode.

Of course, the camera of Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is not the flagship, but it is much better than most competitors in this price range.

The operating system of Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is Android 8.1 Oreo with proprietary shell MIUI 9. In the near future, the company promised to upgrade to MIUI 10, but did not say a word about updating Android 9 Pie.

MIUI is one of the best and most thoughtful interfaces for Android, which has many fans. Several excellent features and useful utilities improve the overall impression of the smartphone. The gesture-based navigation system has received a significant change and is obviously the best way to interact with the interface and applications.

Of course, there are some drawbacks. The annoying ads that Xiaomi has implemented in MIUI, as well as several third-party pre-installed applications that will obviously annoy many users.

Battery and hardware

Budget Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro boasts a large battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh, a charge which lasts for a whole day with active use. In the HD Video playback test, the battery lasted about 20 hours. Fast charging technology is missing here.

The phone is equipped with separate trays for two Nano-SIM-cards and a memory card, and also has a microUSB port instead of a faster USB Type-C.

The cost of Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro

The cost of Redmi 6 Pro for version 3 / 32GB is $ 153 (Rs 10,999) and $ 180 (Rs 12,999) for 4 / 64GB.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is a good smartphone, equipped with modern components, as well as a great attempt to introduce the average performance in the budget segment to keep up with the times. I recommend it for anyone looking for an inexpensive or average smartphone.

In general, Redmi 6 Pro is a robust and functional gadget in a compact, well-designed case, even if its design is a bit boring.

Benefits of Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro

  • Compact form factor.
  • High-quality display.
  • Good battery life. Low price.

Disadvantages of Redmi 6 Pro

  • The design is no different from other Redmi.
  • Poor camera work in low light.

Oppo F9 review: this is not your average smartphone

You can buy Oppo F9 here

Recently, Oppo has released a lot of interesting smartphones, including Oppo Find X with a retractable camera. The new phone Oppo F9 is not so interesting in the specifications, but it offers interesting color solutions and a unique cutout.

I got to know F9 and got to know all its sides. Read about this and more about something else in my review.

Smartphone design

There is no denying that the Oppo F9 is a copy of the iPhone. However, despite the similar appearance and shape, the F9 was not made using the same high-quality materials. Its body looks like a combination of glass and metal, but it is completely made of plastic. This makes the smartphone significantly cheaper compared to competitors with glass or metal structures, but the case itself is quite durable and perfectly assembled.

What makes the Oppo design attractive is its gradient color scheme. I got a review of a red model that turns into purple at the bottom. The unique diamond pattern on the back panel is viewed from different angles. It looks awesome. If red or purple is not your color, there is also a blue model, which tilts to black.

Everything else in the design of the F9 is pretty standard. On the back there is a fingerprint scanner, the power button is located on the right, the volume control on the left, and the headphone jack on the bottom. Oddly, this gadget did not get a USB-Type-C port, Oppo installed an outdated Micro USB.

Display cutout

Another feature in the Oppo F9 that deserves attention is the neckline. Bangs is probably the most hated trend in 2018 smartphones, but Oppo has found a way to make it a good looking complement. The cutout in F9 is much smaller and more attractive than the typical one on other smartphones. It has only a front camera installed, unlike most competitors who have a speaker and various sensors installed there. The speaker here is integrated into the top of the phone.

The 6.3-inch screen has a very thin frame in a circle. With a resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels, this is not the most impressive display that you find on a smartphone in this price category, but it is quite enough. It is large, easy to use and pleasant to watch. The colors are bright, the text is clear, and the maximum brightness is enough to see the contents under direct sunlight.

Oppo F9 is also the first smartphone that comes with Gorilla Glass 6 protection, the strongest glass from Corning, able to survive an average of 15 drops from a height of 1 meter.

Performance and Tests

Smartphone Oppo F9 works on the Mediatek Helio P60 processor in a pair with 6 GB of RAM. During use, most of the time the gadget I tested worked smoothly. Launching applications, navigating through the interface, browsing the web and other typical actions took place without delays and freezes.

The only problem I encountered is games. The phone has difficulty even running Clash Royale, which is a fairly easy game. Oppo software has a game mode for better performance, but I didn’t notice a difference when using it.

The least attractive part of the Oppo F9 is the software. The smartphone runs on Android 8.1 OS Oreo with the ColorOS user interface, which not only changes Android, but also tries to imitate iOS. The appearance of the icons, wallpaper and functions are very similar.

Some features are not intuitive compared to those offered in pure Android. Notifications also can not be deleted. Instead, you need to scroll through the notification from right to left and click the trash icon. This method seems awkward and makes it difficult to quickly remove unnecessary ones.

Battery autonomy

In terms of battery life, the F9 is excellent. A full charge of 3500 mAh battery allows the device to go without recharging all day. In the test of continuous viewing HD-video smartphone lasted 14 hours and 39 minutes, which is not bad. The phone also charges very fast with the fast charging VOOC Oppo. In 30 minutes, the battery is replenished by 30%, in 1 hour at 62%, and a full charge takes 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Oppo F9 cameras

On the back of the Oppo F9, there is a main 16-megapixel sensor with an f / 1.8 diaphragm and an additional 2-megapixel sensor for depth and portrait mode. The camera offers a variety of different functions, like slow-motion shooting, slow-motion video, stickers, AI beauty mode and Google Lens integration.

The main 16-megapixel sensor does not have enough stars from the sky, but it is more than enough. In daylight or good light, the camera works well. Images are quite detailed and have a good dynamic range, and color retains a natural appearance. In low light scenarios, the quality deteriorates dramatically. Photos retain quite a lot of color, but do not have sufficient clarity and lose a lot of detail. This is not surprising, given the lack of optical stabilization in the camera.

The front camera is equipped with a 25-megapixel lens, providing sufficient resolution for zooming and cropping photos. The pictures themselves are good, with nice details and natural skin tones. The intensity of the beauty mode here can be adjusted manually.

Oppo F9 has a lot of modern features at an affordable price. The screen here is almost frameless and with a small cut, there are two cameras, and the color solutions of the case are very unique. This is another smartphone that demonstrates Oppo’s constant efforts in design innovation, the phone no longer offers something special.

Oppo F9 Benefits

  • The cutout here is small.
  • Almost frameless design.
  • Unique colors.
  • Battery and fast charging VOOC.
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack.

F9 Disadvantages

  • Not available in all markets.
  • Sluggish performance.
  • Outdated Micro USB port.

OnePlus 6T Review: an updated and mostly great smartphone

You can buy oneplus 6T here

OnePlus never ceases to please users with the release of budget and flagship smartphones. The company recently unveiled a new OnePlus 6T, which is an improved version of OnePlus 6.

The new OnePlus 6T has several differences, including a fingerprint scanner integrated into the display and a large battery. Whether these changes can be called significant, the main thing was whether they were worth making – read in my review.

Design and appearance

To be honest, I like the OnePlus 6 design more than the 6T, although there is no significant difference between them. The OnePlus 6T case has more curved and thicker edges than its predecessor, which allowed the manufacturer to install a larger battery.

The lower frame of the display of the new item is smaller than that of the 6th OnePlus, however, the difference is almost imperceptible. The most obvious change to be on the front is a new, drop-shaped notch, which is much smaller and contains only the front camera. The speaker is mounted a little higher, right in the case.

At the bottom of the OnePlus 6T there is a USB Type-C port and two grids, under which there is one speaker. I would like to see 2 drivers here, especially as space allows. Headphone jack on the new smartphone OnePlus is missing.

Phone display

The OnePlus 6T is equipped with a 6.41-inch AMOLED Full Optic display with a resolution of 2340 × 1080 and a pixel density of 402ppi. There are various screen calibration modes, including default settings, sRGB, DCI-P3, adaptive and custom profile.

The 6T display is slightly brighter than the previous version and clearly visible in almost all situations, including in direct sunlight. A special mode makes reading in the dark more comfortable.

Performance and Tests

Traditionally, OnePlus smartphones have high performance and 6T is no exception. Thanks to additional functions and system optimization, the gadget works quickly and smoothly, and the game mode gives an additional boost to performance when it is needed.

In tests, the OnePlus 6T showed excellent results, and in some even surpassed the Galaxy Note 9. In the Geekbench 4 single-core mode, the 6T result reached 2368 points, and in the multi-core mode – 8843. For comparison, the previous model in the single-core scored 2454, when the Galaxy S9 result was 2144 points, and in multi-core 8967 and 8116 respectively.

In 3DMark, the result reaches 4697 points, while the OnePlus 6 and Galaxy S9 scored 4680 and 4672, respectively. The AnTuTu is 292,266, compared to 262,614 for the OnePlus 6T and 266,559 for the Galaxy S9.

Equipment and components

The OnePlus 6T smartphone runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 flagship processor, paired with 6/8 GB of RAM and 128/256 GB of internal memory.

Probably the most significant addition to OnePlus 6T is the optical fingerprint scanner built into the screen, which, in addition to unlocking, serves to enter secure applications. Unfortunately, the scanner does not work very quickly, and sometimes inaccurately. I hope this problem will be solved with the next software update.

Oneplus 6T cameras

On the back of the phone is a camera with two lenses – the main 16-megapixel with f / 1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization, as well as an additional 20-megapixel for determining the depth. The front camera here received a 16-megapixel sensor.

The main camera of OnePlus 6T is not bad, but it seems less saturated and soft when looking at the pictures in comparison with the competitors. With low light, its performance is significantly reduced. To reduce noise, the sensor smooths objects too much because of what the photos are unclear. To avoid this, OnePlus has added a new “Night mode,” which provides long exposures to increase sharpness and dynamic range.

The OnePlus 6T front camera in both standard and portrait mode tends to smooth the skin. In some cases it looks good, but some objects look too artificial. It is less saturated than the back, although the portrait mode works well. I didn’t notice much improvement in the video compared to OnePlus 6.

Phone OnePlus 6T works on Android 9.0 Pie with user interface OxygenOS 9.0.3. The operating system has many settings, including four Ambient Display screen savers and the ability to run applications with different accounts. There is also an encrypted blocker to hide applications or hide notifications and three types of animation for the fingerprint scanner. All options are unobtrusive and not so much compared to other shells.

OnePlus 6T also offers gesture control. For example, a double tap anywhere on the screen, you can unlock the phone or by simultaneously pressing three fingers to take a screenshot. Thanks to the Smart Boost feature, which uses additional RAM, applications open 20% faster.

Extended battery

The capacity of the OnePlus 6T battery is 3,700 mAh as opposed to 3,000 mAh for the OnePlus 6. Technically, this is only a 12% increase in capacity, but thanks to advanced software, the battery life has increased significantly. On average, the device is able to stretch one and a half days without recharging.

The fast charge mode did not need to be improved, so it remained the same as its predecessor, but there is no wireless charging again.

Oneplus 6T Cost

  • 6/128 GB of memory – $ 549 (Rs 37,999).
  • 8/128 GB of memory – $ 579 (Rs 41,999).
  • 8/256 GB of memory – $ 629 (Rs 45,999).

The updated flagship OnePlus 6T remains one of the best deals to date. No other manufacturer has been able to improve the hardware and software of their devices as OnePlus, even Google still has problems optimizing Android for its devices.

It’s impossible to look at 6T without comparing it with OnePlus 6. These two devices are so similar that I cannot recommend buying OnePlus 6T if you already have a previous version. Both phones are equipped with almost identical specifications. Nevertheless, the updated flagship OnePlus still does not offer features such as the S Pen or 40-megapixel camera. 6T is another good smartphone at a good price and for many it is enough.

  • Small neckline.
  • High-quality screen.
  • Good performance. A
  • wesome OxygenOS interface.
  • Improved battery life.

  • Not the best cameras.
  • No headphone jack.
  • The fingerprint scanner is unstable.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro review: powerful and transparent smartphone

You can buy Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro here

Xiaomi is ambitiously expanding its offerings in the niche of flagship devices, and now we have the opportunity to purchase a “fat” Global version of Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro for a little more than $ 500, it is offered by the Chinese marketplace CooliCool. Yes, this is an expensive smartphone, but it is still cheaper, the flagships of its main competitors.

Xiaomi phones have something that people recommend to others. Nevertheless, the recognition of Xiaomi by users is mainly due to the low price of smartphones and the best price-quality ratio. Attracting the most demanding customers is completely different. The company’s first approaches to the top shelf were generally successful – in terms of components and capabilities, the most expensive Xiaomi smartphones did not differ much from the brand ones. How will the Mi 8 Pro show itself? Read in my review.

Transparent design

The design of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is unique and is currently a distinctive addition to the background of the usual similar devices. Xiaomi refined the idea of HTC – transparent glass backs. The entire back of the new phone is transparent, and only at the edges of the glass becomes darker. You can see all the components and connections through glass, or, it seems, at first glance. In the network you can find a video with the analysis of Mi 8 Pro, where it turns out, almost everything that can be seen through the glass case – the dummy. Real components do not look so elegant.

Of course, it is a pity that these are not real components of a smartphone, but it is worth recognizing that the phone looks beautiful. Remember the transparent HTC, its insides were so-so looking. Even a careful look at the body does not cause any signals that it might just be a piece of plastic. The red power button on the side is the cherry on the cake. Visually, Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is one of the most beautiful smartphones on the market. At least until you take it into your own hands, because all the stains and fingerprints will remain on the smooth glass.

On-Screen Fingerprint Scanner

Mi 8 Pro is not the first smartphone with a fingerprint scanner on the screen that I am testing. The solution is undoubtedly convenient and allows you to coordinate the narrow frame of the screen with quick access to the reader, regardless of whether the phone is on the table or placed in the car holder.

Nevertheless, I must say that, although it looks super modern, the scanners placed on the screen are currently a little slower than the traditional ones we are used to, although most will not notice. But, it does not spoil the pleasure of using Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro, but rather the opposite.

Components and filling

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro has one mono speaker on the bottom edge of the case, which is easy to close by hand in horizontal mode. Although this type of gadget has extremely loud driver. Even while listening to videos while cooking in the kitchen, I reduced the sound by several levels from the maximum volume, which I did not do with any other smartphone before. The device is great for video and negotiations, but the sound is a bit flat for music, branded smartphones with stereo speakers win here.

The two main camera lenses protrude slightly above the rear case and make the Mi 8 Pro phone swing slightly while lying back on the table, but the gadget recognizes all screen touches. The physical keys on the side faces are very pleasant to use, with an accurate, tangible click.

The biggest limitation in the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is the lack of protection against water and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. If the USB Type-C port for headphones gradually becomes the standard for expensive models, the lack of sealing is difficult to justify.

Great screen

Phone Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro received a 6.21-inch AMOLED-display with a resolution of 2248 × 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 402 PPI. The screen is compatible with HDR10 and DCI-P3.

Panel parameters correspond to the top shelf. AMOLED provides high contrast and rich colors. Brightness adjustment with a wide range, provided a high maximum value. I have nothing bad to say about the viewing angles. Compared with the flagships from other manufacturers, the QHD resolution, also called 2K, is absent here.

In the display settings there is a reading mode, a reduction in blue light, as well as contrast and color temperature. Screen Mi 8 Pro has a wide cutout, partly due to the system of infrared facial recognition. As a result, there is not much space for notification icons, which for some reason are not yet displayed even in the remaining space.

CPU and performance

Recently, Xiaomi has gained even more popularity due to the high specifications in the low-priced Pocophone F1. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro also has a Snapdragon 845 processor with 4 × 2.8 GHz and 4 × 1.8 GHz cores. Responsible for the graphics is the fast Adreno 630 chipset. All this is supported by 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB for the system and user files (there are less). It is a pity that the manufacturer here refused to support memory cards, but there is a double SIM card slot.

We already know the Snapdragon 845 well, and we know what results we can expect from it. In the case of Mi 8 Pro, GeekBench 4 scores were 1808 points for one core and 7601 points for the sum of all cores. In Antutu, the smartphone received 287,938 points, ranking 6th in the overall rating. The Androbench test of the speed of the integrated memory with sequential readings showed 727 MB / s and with a sequential write of 204 MB / s.

Operating system

Smartphone Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is running the operating system Android 8.1 with the shell MIUI Global 9.6. While phone manufacturers are not in a hurry to transfer their devices to Android 9, and devices that offer the latest Google OS on the day of the premiere can be counted on fingers.

Everyone who is familiar with the MIUI interface from other Xiaomi smartphones will feel at home. Nevertheless, users of pure Android or shells from other manufacturers will have to get used to the settings and some features of the Mi 8 Pro.

To the left of the main desktop, instead of the Google helper, we have hidden several shortcuts with system functions, such as clearing the memory, control panel, notes, calendar events. By default, all icons of installed applications are placed on the desktop. System applications include: browser, gallery, music, control panel, calculator, clock, voice recorder, notebook, scanner, compass, weather, calendar, notes, MIUI help and file manager.

In the system settings, you can replace the screen buttons with gestures or hide the designation with a black background. MIUI also provides the ability to clone applications if we want to connect more than one account to a client of a social network, and the program itself does not support such a function. You can also create additional space that allows software to be separated, for example, private and professional life.

I appreciate the convenience and features of MIUI, which are really useful, but in terms of aesthetics and layout, I prefer pure Android or solutions from other manufacturers. However, this is a matter of individual preference. In terms of stability and smoothness of the work, I have no complaints about Xiaomi 8 Pro.

Mi 8 Pro Cameras

Updated Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro has two cameras on the back of the case – with a resolution of 12-megapixel. Primary with f / 1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization and focusing using PDAF phase detection. The second camera offers a double approximation, f / 2.4, but without optical stabilization and phase detection. I always emphasize that the three-time approximation in Huawei is much more practical than the double in other smartphones. When you enlarge the image, the difference is clearly visible.

You can select camera modes by moving the screen from side to side, which is just above the shutter button. Available modes include: picture, video, short video, portrait, panorama, etc. In addition, there is HDR, and you can activate AI (AI – artificial intelligence) by adding automatic correction in the color scheme of images or choose one of the color filters. Under the settings button there are more options.

It takes time to “find yourself” in the Mi 8 Pro camera app. In manual mode, all the necessary settings are offered, you can even set the time interval, which is rarely found in similar software of telephone cameras.

Photo quality

The most important factor is the quality of the photo, in the past it was the Achilles heel of the best Xiaomi models. In the case of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro, everything is really good. Photos detailed and cutting. The tonal range is good and well supported by the HDR feature. Colors are natural, but not blurry. AI copes with the recognition of many scenes. In short, you will be satisfied with the pictures of this Xiaomi.

Compared to the Huawei P20 Pro, you may notice a bit more noise, the Mi 8 Pro does not have a special night mode and a triple optical zoom. On the other hand, the price of the Xiaomi gadget is clearly lower, therefore such differences are excusable.

Video shooting

The new flagship smartphone Xiaomi provides a wide range of video modes. 4K and FHD quality is very high. Both 4K and FHD modes are stabilized, although 4K is optical stabilization, while FHD has an additional digital one that is invisible when viewed during recording, but only after the file is played. So you can create great, 4K stabilized videos.

Mi 8 Pro shoots FHD at 120 frames, as well as slow motion video with the same resolution of 240 fps, although in the latter case the resolution looks interpolated from HD. The difference is that material with slow motion is immediately slowed down and saved to play clips in 30 frames, although normal FHD in 120 frames is played at normal speed.

The front camera Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro received a high resolution 20-megapixel and f / 2.0 aperture. The focus of the lens is constantly blocked, but in most cases it allows you to achieve high quality selfies.

Communication and sensors

LTE 1024/150 Mbit / s, WiFi AC, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC are responsible for the connection. The location is determined using GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO and QZSS. The manufacturer reports two independent antennas and GPS modules to improve the accuracy of work in difficult terrain.

The package of sensors includes: gyroscope, accelerometer, proximity sensor, light, digital compass, barometer and fingerprint scanner on the screen. There is a face scan function using infrared radiation.

Autonomy Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro

Smartphone Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro got a 3000 mAh battery. Compared to other top shelf flagships, this does not make a special impression. Fortunately, the device copes well with energy consumption.

In a continuous test of a YouTube video stream with screen brightness set to half, Mi 8 Pro discharged the battery from 100% to 10% after 10 hours and 41 minutes. In other words, there is a chance to exceed 12 hours of continuous video viewing. This is a very good result. The recently tested Nokia 7.1 worked 8 hours. The result of Xiaomi is similar to Honor Play or Sony Xperia XZ3. Some competitors work longer, but this is a certain minority.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is an interesting and noteworthy smartphone. As for the price of the device at $ 500, which is now offered by CooliCool.com, it is justified in view of its functions, if you can afford it. On the other hand, starting from the day of launch, the Mi 8 Pro is gradually getting cheaper and even at the start it was more accessible in comparison with the flagships from other brands. This is a huge difference.

Updated Xiaomi Mi 8 got a lot of remarkable features – an excellent screen with a built-in fingerprint scanner, a transparent back cover, high performance, a lot of RAM and good cameras.

For whom is Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro?

  • Who is looking for an original design.
  • Wants to have a fingerprint scanner on the screen.
  • Looking for the best parts and camera at a reasonable price.
  • For MIUI lovers and Xiaomi fans.

Who does not fit?

  • Not for requiring a sealed enclosure.
  • Not for those who appreciate pure Android.
  • Not for very economical.

What distinguishes the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro – is a transparent case, which, although it does not display the real components, but it looks very unusual. In this smartphone, all the compromises look less problematic, so I recommend it for purchase, without a shadow of a doubt. If you can afford it, of course.

  • One of a kind design.
  • Super loud speaker.
  • Fingerprint scanner in the screen.
  • AMOLED screen with great features.

Huawei Nova 3 review – excellent from all sides

You can buy Huawei Nova 3 here

The Chinese giant Huawei this year does not slow down the pace for a moment and at every step introduces very interesting devices into its offer. As a phone Huawei Nova 3, which in many ways can compete even with the flagships.

The Nova 3 smartphone is similar to the Huaweia P20 and Honor 10, but does this mean that it is a copy of them? How does the phone work in everyday use? Is it profitable to buy it? I will answer these and many other questions in the review.

Characteristics of Huawei Nova 3

We get a pretty good set. Huawei Nova 3 offers a 6.3-inch IPS-display with a resolution of Full HD + and a ratio of 15.5: 9. Its heart is an eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor with a Mali-G72 MP12 graphic chip. The kit is supported by 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded using microSD cards with a maximum capacity of 256 GB.

The quality of the shooting is the responsibility of the dual 16-megapixel + 24-megapixel main camera with an f / 1.8 aperture and the dual 24-megapixel + 2-megapixel front camera with f / 2.0. The package includes the following modules: dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, GPS, A-GPS, Glonass and USB-C.

Nova 3 runs Android 8.1 Oreo OS with EMUI 8.2 cover and consumes battery power with a capacity of 3750 mAh. Its dimensions are 157 × 73.7 × 7.3 mm and weighs 166 grams.

Box contents

Packaging of Huawei Nova 3 does not stand out among other devices manufacturer, which is not surprising. The box is made of thick cardboard and completely white. On the front panel you will find only the manufacturer’s logo and the inscription of the device model. Similar elements are placed on the side walls.

As always, with Huawei smartphones, attention is paid to details here. In the kit, in addition to the phone, there is a charger with a removable USB cable, a key clip that allows you to open the tray, headset, cover and basic documentation.

Appearance and design

Huawei Nova 3 attracts the design of the case, at first glance, it seems that the smartphone is aimed at young and active people who appreciate the unusual appearance and interesting solutions. Particular attention is drawn to the color version, which I had the opportunity to test, more precisely – Purple Iris, which means that we are dealing with a purple-blue case.

In practice, the glass surface flickers from different angles, shimmering from purple to blue, like in Honora 10, which I tested some time ago. It is important to note that the frame of the device is also in blue and purple colors and is made of shiny aluminum. If you look from the front, it seems that the Nova 3 looks like many other Huawei smartphones released this year.

We have a large, 6.3-inch display with a cutout, the so-called “bang”. The frames around the screen are relatively narrow – someone may say that the phone is big, but in general I think it looks very good and will appeal to many. I do not mind the logos and inscriptions on the case, provided that they are of reasonable size and do not take up much space. In the case of Nova 3 from Huawei, everything looks great, in this regard, I have no objection.

As we looked at the front, it was time to look at the back. There is a protruding camera module, which is placed vertically, which again looks very much like other smartphones of this year. It is important to note that the camera module protrudes above the case, but this is not the only “structural” flaw.

First of all, the glass surface gets dirty like crazy, which makes the process of keeping the device in frequency very difficult. Secondly, the material is susceptible to scratches, but I must note that after my tests I did not find serious scratches. And yes, I know that things may look different after several years or even months of everyday use.

And thirdly, the case is slippery, so the smartphone “runs away” even when we put it on a relatively simple surface. Fortunately, all the above reservations or defects can be “removed” by wearing a case that the manufacturer adds to the kit. True, it slightly spoils the style and appearance of the device itself, the main thing is that the gadget is protected from mechanical damage.

To top it off, thanks to the rounded edges, the device is comfortable to hold in your hand. However, you should be aware that Huawei Nova 3 is quite large, so one-handed operations can be difficult – especially if you are a man with small hands.

The location of individual elements, ports and connectors is not surprising – everything is standard. On the right side of the button for adjusting the volume and switching, on the left – a tray for two nanoSIM cards, one of which serves as a slot for microSD cards. At the bottom there is a USB-C, a 3.5 mm audio jack, one microphone and a speaker, and on the top there is a lot of unused space – there is only a microphone hole.

On the front panel, above the 6.3-inch screen, we find two front camera lenses, a speaker, a set of sensors and a notification diode. The rear panel, in turn, had two protruding cameras with LEDs, a fingerprint scanner, located slightly below, in the center, as well as the Huawei logo and several inscriptions or symbols.

Nova 3 is a really good smartphone and is made with attention to detail; it is able to please many users.

Large display

Smartphone Huawei Nova 3 is equipped with a 6.3-inch IPS display with a relatively unique aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. The screen is characterized by a resolution of Full HD +, which according to the specified parameters gives a pixel density per inch at 409ppi. In practice, meaning means good quality of displayed fonts and small icons. Even at close range you will not be able to see the jagged edges of the icons.

As I already mentioned, the smartphone has a thin frame around the display, and this is true. We have very narrow edges on three sides, and in the upper part there is a notch (bang), which some people like and others do the opposite. I am neutral in this matter, and the presence of the notch does not bother me in any way. Of course, in a few moments you will get used to it. It is important that the neckline can be “hidden”. It is enough to find an option in the settings that darkens the space on the sides.

When it comes to setting up content for unusual proportions, there are no problems here – most programs automatically scale, and the rest can do it manually. Here we have an IPS-display, which is characterized by pleasant colors, good viewing angles and contrast. It should be mentioned about the brightness – both the minimum and maximum. In the sun, I had no problems reading the contents displayed on the screen, at night I also did not feel any discomfort.

In weaker lighting conditions, we can additionally turn on the blue light filter, which is very convenient when reading at night. There is also an ambient light sensor, which during the tests did not cause problems and acted as it should. In the settings of the screen Nova 3, we can change the display mode and font size, color temperature, as well as reduce the resolution to HD +. There is an intelligent resolution feature that automatically reduces it to save energy.

It is worth mentioning that after removing the device from the box it already had a protective film, so that scratches on the screen will not appear. If the question is whether this has a negative effect on the responsiveness of the panel, then here I did not experience any inconvenience.

Four cameras of Huawei Nova 3

Phone Nova 3 boasts four cameras – two behind and in front. The main camera is characterized by lenses with a resolution of 24-MP and 16-MP. Both have f / 1.8 aperture and one LED. It is worth noting that in this case the 16-megapixel sensor is color, and the 24-megapixel is monochrome. As I already mentioned, we also get a dual camera on the front panel: 24-MP + 2-MP with f / 2.0 aperture, but here both lenses are colored.

Huawei Nova 3 camera applications have been slightly reworked compared to my previously proven models. It is still very user friendly. Movement here is carried out by moving between the right and left screens. Each has a separate mode, so you only need to move your finger in the right direction to start it. It is no longer necessary to display a separate map where all modes are available, although it is worth noting that such a section has also appeared here, but there are not very many positions in it yet.

Smartphone Nova 3 offers a variety of modes, which should be pleasantly surprised by potential users, among them it is worth mentioning: professional, slow motion, night mode, panorama, black and white, HDR, temporary, filter, three-dimensional panorama, watermark and scanning documents. As you can see, there are many additional modes, but this is not all, because the manufacturer has added AI mode or artificial intelligence, which we can disable at the top of the main view.

Photo quality

AI mode can recognize photographed scenes and objects. All this is needed to get better quality photos, more attractive to the user. The smartphone does this thanks to the NPU processor (Neutral Processing Unit), built into Kirin 970, which is responsible for the work of the already mentioned artificial intelligence. The manufacturer reports that today the algorithms are able to recognize 500 different scenes and 22 types of objects, so that the gadget can choose the best parameters for shooting.

When it comes to the quality of photos taken in AI mode, it is really good. But I have the impression that sometimes the mode mentioned embellishes colors that look unnatural too much. The camera kit, created by Huawei, works satisfactorily in all lighting conditions. The quality of images taken during the day is very good – both the number of recorded parts and the tonal range. The reproduction of colors here is positively surprising, because they are natural. Unfortunately, night shots are not like that. Photos taken in low light conditions are characterized by good color reproduction, but the details and sharpness leave much to be desired.

Two lenses allow you to take pictures of deep sharpness. The bokeh effect is visible well, and the function itself beautifully “cuts off” the first plan from the second. An additional lens in the case of the Nova 3 also allows you to take pictures with double zoom. The quality of these photos is not the best, but overall not bad.

Front camera

I have to admit that in this respect, Huawei Nova 3 is a phenomenal device. We can take pictures in HDR and AI. Photos are characterized by high sharpness, high color reproduction, as well as detail. All this makes Nova 3 one of the best smartphones for selfie.

Video shooting

You can shoot video with a maximum resolution of 4K UHD at 30 frames per second. It is possible to record in “stretched” resolution Full HD + and standard Full HD at 60 and 30 frames. The overall quality of the shooting is satisfactory – the clips are smooth, have the correct color rendition, as well as fast and smooth change of plans. Autofocus here is also positively good.

Huawei Nova 3 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.1 overlay. The interface is transparent, functional and pleasing to the eye, although many may not like the fact that it is far from the pure version of Android.

The Nova 3 shell gives us a lot of personalization options, like a selection of themes, wallpapers and icons. A novelty that I first encountered in Honor 10 is the mode that allows you to connect multiple smartphones together to create a single multichannel sound system. The function is not bad, but not very useful for me.

Huawei interface is filled with a large number of functions, which contrary to many opinions is very convenient in everyday use.

Fingerprint scanner and face recognition

The Huawei Nova 3 fingerprint scanner is located at the back, just below the place where my index finger goes, so after grabbing the device, it wanders. But you can contact the reader no matter where your hands are. The scanner is placed in the recess, so it is easy to find. It is always active, which means that to unlock the device, you only need to put a finger.

The sensor is effective and works in any situation – during the tests I accidentally incorrectly applied my finger. The scanner unlocked the phone very quickly, regardless of the angle. You can also use it to shoot, view the gallery and turn off the alarm. Using the reader, you can block access to selected applications and create a safe.

Unlocking in the face on Huawei devices works without complaints. This solution is the most convenient and fast. After raising the smartphone, the screen lights up, so you do not need to wake it up yourself. Face recognition on the Nova 3 happens very quickly, regardless of the lighting. In this regard, Huawei smartphones can be considered among the best.

When it comes to face recognition after dark, I have to admit that everything works without problems, after taking the device in hand, the screen lights up, thanks to which our face is lit and the camera can recognize it.

Performance and Tests

The model under test is equipped with a HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor, which consists of eight cores: 4 × ARM Cortex-A73 with a clock frequency of 2.3 GHz and 4 × ARM Cortex-A53 with a frequency of 1.8 GHz, and a Mali-G72 MP2 graphics chip. Here we used a special SoC for artificial intelligence, performed in a 10 nm lithographic process. All supported 4 GB of RAM.

The Huawei Nova 3 phone works like an all class device. In everyday use – very quickly. Commands are executed instantly, no slowdowns occur. The device did not let me down during the whole period of testing – it quickly launched applications and switched between them.

Graphics cope even with the more demanding titles available on Google Play. We can easily run games such as Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8 or Mortal Kombat X, at the highest graphic settings. Only one thing I noticed, Nova 3 likes to bask in time for a longer game or activity. Nevertheless, this is not the temperature, which will adversely affect the comfort of using the phone.

Sound quality

Huawei in this model decided to place one speaker. Its location is not the best, because the driver is very easily closed by the inside of the hand, when held in a horizontal position. The sound quality is fine. The sound is pleasant and not “artificial”, it does not make noise and does not crack at the highest volume.

Nova 3 is not a music smartphone, but just a gadget for listening to music. We can also enjoy the 3.5mm audio jack. The sound quality in the headphones is more than satisfactory.

Connectivity and connections

We have a dual-band Wi-Fi module (802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). I have no objections to its work – the module catches the network without any problems, even after a considerable distance from the router. Bluetooth 4.2, copes with additional accessories without any reservations. There is NFC, which during tests performed all tasks perfectly.

Navigation during the entire period of my testing did not cause problems – the signal and satellites were detected quickly. With the range of the cellular network everything is as good as with the quality of communication during conversations – the interlocutors heard me loudly and clearly, I also had no problems understanding people on the other side. I also enjoyed the Type-C USB port.

The equipment also includes Dual SIM, operating in standby mode – one of the cards ceases to be active when we start calling from the second one. Huawei has equipped the Nova 3 as much as 128 GB of internal memory, of which about 112 GB remains for the user, but they can be expanded with memory cards up to 256 GB.

Battery of Huawei Nova 3

I do not deny that I was most afraid during the work of this model. All of the things that offer a large display and a lot of interesting features greatly affect the battery charge. In practice, it turned out that the Nova 3 is a smartphone, which is in many ways positively surprising.

With everyday, more demanding use of energy, it is enough for one day, of which time on the screen is 4-5.5 hours on average. Several times I had to use Huawei Nova 3 at full speed. In this case, the display brightness was maximum, all basic communication modules were turned on, and Navigation and Spotify were performed continuously for several hours. The smartphone with this use allows you to get 3-3.5 hours on the screen, in practice means that the charge will last about half a day.

With a moderate energy consumption it is enough for one and a half to two days. This scenario allows you to get about 5.5-6.5 hours on the screen, and I can get even a little more than 6 hours. Of course, the running time depends on the brightness of the display, the modules and applications used.

You do not have to worry about energy losses, because Nova 3, Huawei has equipped with fast charging technology. The charger included in the kit can charge the device up to 85% per hour, and the whole process of recharging 0 to 100% takes about 80 minutes.

Huawei Nova 3 is a modern smartphone that in all respects will meet the desires of more demanding users. At the moment, it costs about Rs 34,999, which at first glance may seem like a very high price. However, if you look at it realistically, then I can find fault here only with a few things, which happens not very often.

Nova 3 received an excellent design, NFC, USB-C, good autonomy, 128 GB of internal memory and Dual SIM. In fact, there is everything you can want from the phone in this segment. I can only find fault with monodynamics. On the other hand, there are several devices in stores that are the main competitors of this model. I recommend Nova 3 without much hesitation. It is worth your attention and money.
